Balance & Fall Prevention

Steadier on your feet — at any age

One in four adults over 65 falls each year, and most falls are preventable. Balance is trainable — like strength, it responds to the right progressive challenge. StepWell’s balance and fall-prevention program rebuilds the three systems that keep you upright: strength, sensation, and the reflexes that catch you when the ground surprises you.

Who this program is for

  • Adults who’ve fallen, or nearly fallen, in the past year
  • Anyone who’s started holding walls or furniture at home
  • People with dizziness or unsteadiness on stairs and curbs
  • Adults with neuropathy, arthritis, or after joint surgery

What we actually train

Your evaluation measures where balance breaks down — strength, ankle strategy, reaction time, or confidence. Then we train it progressively and safely: strength work for the hips and ankles, controlled challenges on different surfaces, stepping reactions, and real-world practice like curbs and stairs. You’re guarded by your therapist the entire time.

Confidence is half the battle

After a fall, many adults quietly shrink their world — fewer stairs, fewer outings. That deconditioning makes the next fall more likely. Rebuilding measurable steadiness rebuilds confidence, and that’s what gets people back to their lives.

Common questions

Is balance training safe if I’m already unsteady?
Yes — that’s the point of doing it with a physical therapist. Every drill is guarded and matched to your current ability, then progressed as you improve.
Can PT help with dizziness?
Often, yes. Many types of dizziness and unsteadiness respond well to targeted vestibular and balance exercises. Your evaluation sorts out whether your symptoms fit that pattern or need a physician’s workup first.
Does Medicare cover balance therapy?
Medicare Part B covers medically necessary physical therapy, including balance rehabilitation. We verify your coverage before you start.
