Manual Therapy

Skilled hands-on treatment, every single visit

Manual therapy is the hands-on part of physical therapy: joint mobilization, soft-tissue work, and guided stretching performed by your therapist’s hands, not a machine. At many clinics it’s an occasional add-on. At StepWell it’s built into every visit, because restoring how a joint or muscle actually moves is usually the fastest way to turn down pain and unlock progress.

Techniques we use

  • Joint mobilization — graded, targeted movement to restore stiff or guarded joints.
  • Soft-tissue mobilization — hands-on work for tight, overworked, or scarred muscle and fascia.
  • Muscle energy & stretching techniques — using your own gentle contractions to reset range of motion.
  • Nerve glides — for irritated nerves in conditions like sciatica or carpal tunnel.

Hands-on plus exercise — not either/or

Manual therapy opens the window; exercise keeps it open. Research and our daily experience agree: the combination outperforms either alone. Your therapist uses hands-on treatment to restore motion and calm symptoms, then immediately retrains the new range with targeted exercise so the change sticks between visits.

Common questions

Is manual therapy the same as massage?
No. Massage is general relaxation-focused soft-tissue work. Manual therapy is a clinical tool — specific techniques applied to specific joints and tissues to change how you move, performed by a licensed physical therapist as part of a treatment plan.
Does joint mobilization crack or pop?
Usually not. Most mobilization is slow and graded. If a technique involves a quicker movement, your therapist explains it first and only proceeds with your consent.
Is it safe if I have arthritis or osteoporosis?
Yes — techniques are graded to your tissue tolerance and medical history. Tell your therapist about any diagnoses; the plan adapts to you.
