Gait Training

Walk better, farther, and with less pain

The way you walk is a window into everything else — strength, joint mobility, balance, and pain. Gait training retrains your walking pattern after injury, surgery, or years of compensation. Whether the goal is ditching a limp, walking farther without your hip barking, or moving confidently without a cane, we break your gait down and rebuild it piece by piece.

When gait training helps

  • Limping that persists after an injury has “healed”
  • Walking after knee or hip replacement
  • Recovery after a fracture or long period off your feet
  • Progressing away from a walker or cane safely
  • Foot drop and neuropathy-related walking changes

How we retrain a walking pattern

Your therapist watches you walk — closely, repeatedly, sometimes on video — and identifies the specific fault: a short step on one side, a hip that drops, a foot that doesn’t clear. Then we fix the underlying limiter with strength and mobility work while cueing the new pattern until it becomes automatic. Compensations that took months to build take focused practice to unbuild, and that’s exactly what one-on-one visits are for.

Common questions

I’ve limped for years. Is it too late?
Rarely. Long-standing patterns take more practice to change, but the body adapts at any age. The first step is finding out what’s driving the limp — pain, stiffness, weakness, or habit.
Do I need special equipment?
No. We train on real-world surfaces — floors, stairs, curbs, inclines — because that’s where you walk.
Can you help me get rid of my cane?
If it’s safe, yes — we test what’s limiting you and progress you off assistive devices step by step.
