Senior Mobility & Strength

Independence is a physical skill — keep it

Getting off the floor. Carrying groceries upstairs. Standing from a low chair without pushing off. These are the abilities that keep older adults independent, and every one of them is trainable. StepWell’s senior mobility program is strength training and movement practice tailored to adults who want to stay in their homes, on the golf course, and out of assisted living — on their own terms.

What we work on

  • Leg strength — the single best predictor of independence in older adults
  • Floor transfers — getting down to and up from the ground safely
  • Stairs, curbs, and car transfers — the daily movements that shrink first
  • Endurance — walking farther without needing a bench every block

Strength training at 70, 80, and beyond

Muscle responds to training at every age — studies show meaningful strength gains well into the 90s. The difference is dosing and supervision, which is exactly what one-on-one PT provides. We start where you are, progress carefully, and measure everything so you can see the trend line yourself.

A word to adult children

If you’re reading this for a parent: the earlier strength work starts, the more independence it preserves. A free screening is an easy, no-pressure way to get an honest read on where Mom or Dad stands.

Common questions

Is this covered by Medicare?
Medicare Part B covers medically necessary PT — and declining strength, balance, or mobility that threatens independence generally qualifies. We verify benefits before the first visit.
My parent isn’t “injured.” Can they still come?
Yes. Difficulty with stairs, chairs, or walking distance is itself a treatable condition. You don’t need to wait for a fall or a diagnosis.
How is this different from a gym or trainer?
A Doctor of Physical Therapy accounts for arthritis, joint replacements, heart and blood pressure considerations, and fall risk — and can bill insurance when care is medically necessary.
